XAT 2027 (Xavier Aptitude Test 2027) is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI - Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur. What is XAT 2027?

XAT stands for Xavier Aptitude Test. XLRI - Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, has been conducting this exam since 1955, making it one of the oldest and most respected MBA entrance exams in India. XLRI itself is consistently ranked among the top five business schools in the country.

XAT 2027 is the qualifying exam for XLRI’s PGDM programmes in Business Management (BM) and Human Resource Management (HRM). Over 150 other premier management institutes across India — including XIM University Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, GIM Goa, TAPMI, and MICA — also use XAT scores for their admission processes.

XAT is a 3-hour computer-based test. It is unique among MBA entrance exams because it includes a Decision Making section, which tests your ability to make analytical and ethical decisions in complex business scenarios. No other major MBA entrance exam in India — not CAT, SNAP, or NMAT — has this section. This makes XAT distinctly different and requires focused preparation beyond standard CAT study material.

Educational Qualification

• You must have a bachelor’s degree from any recognized university in India or abroad.
• There is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation to register for XAT.
• Final-year students who are yet to receive their degree can also apply for XAT 2027.
• XLRI accepts candidates from all disciplines — engineering, commerce, arts, science, law, medicine, or any other stream.

Age Limit

• There is no upper age limit for XAT 2027.
• Both fresh graduates and experienced professionals are eligible.

Work Experience

• Work experience is not mandatory to appear for XAT.
• For XLRI’s BM and HRM programmes, work experience carries significant weight during the final WAT and PI selection round. Most candidates admitted to XLRI have 0–3 years of experience.
• SPJIMR Mumbai requires at least 2 years of full-time work experience and does not admit fresh graduates. Check each college’s criteria separately.

Nationality

• Both Indian nationals and foreign nationals can appear for XAT.

Individual colleges like XLRI assess Class 10, Class 12, and graduation GPA as part of the final selection score. A strong academic profile improves your overall chances even if XAT has no minimum percentage requirement for registration.

XAT 2027 registration is currently open at xatonline.in. You must complete it before December 6, 2026. The application is fully online. You should keep your scanned documents and payment details ready before you start, so you can finish the form in one sitting without interruption.

Step-by-Step XAT 2027 Registration Guide

1. Create Your Account: Go to xatonline.in and register using your email ID and mobile number. You will get a User ID and password.
2. Fill the Application Form: Log in and enter your personal details, academic qualifications, and work experience.
3. Upload Photo and Signature: Upload a recent passport-size photograph and your signature in the format specified on the portal.
4. Choose Your Test City: Select your preferred exam city from the available options.

XAT 2027 Syllabus

XLRI has not released a formal XAT 2027 syllabus document. Based on previous years’ XAT papers, however, the important topics for each section are well established. The XAT 2027 syllabus is not expected to change significantly from XAT 2026.

Decision Making (DM) — 21 Questions

Decision Making is the hardest section for most first-time XAT candidates. You need at least 10–12 weeks of consistent practice. Focus on learning how to eliminate wrong choices using ethical reasoning rather than calculation.

Verbal and Logical Ability (VLA) — 26 Questions

• Reading Comprehension: 2–3 passages with 3–5 questions each; topics are often abstract, philosophical, or literary
• Para Jumbles: Rearranging sentences into a coherent paragraph
• Sentence Completion and Correction
• Critical Reasoning: Assumptions, inferences, strengthening or weakening arguments
• Vocabulary and Analogies

XAT’s VLA passages are deliberately abstract and literary, quite different from the business-themed passages common in CAT. Reading quality English publications — especially long-form essays and opinion pieces — helps significantly with this section.

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QADI) — 28 Questions

• Arithmetic: Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time-speed-distance, work and time, ratio and proportion
• Algebra: Equations, functions, progressions, inequalities

QADI overlaps significantly with CAT’s Quantitative Ability section. If you are preparing for CAT 2026, your QADI foundation is largely in place. XAT QADI is known for multi-step Geometry, Number Theory, and Data Sufficiency problems. Strengthen these areas specifically for XAT.

General Knowledge (GK) — 20 Questions

• Current Affairs: National and international events from the past 12 months
• Business and Economy: Corporate news, economic policy, Union Budget, RBI updates
• Sports: Major tournaments, records, and awards
• Science and Technology: Major discoveries, space missions, and tech developments
• Static GK: Indian geography, history, polity, and culture

GK is not counted in your XAT percentile, but several top colleges — including XIM Bhubaneswar — factor in GK performance during their shortlisting and interview rounds. Do not skip GK preparation.

XAT 2027 Admit Card

XAT 2027 admit card is expected to be released around December 20, 2026 — about 15 days before the exam on January 3, 2027. This matches the XAT 2026 timeline, when XLRI released the admit card on December 20, 2025 for the January 4, 2026 exam.

XAT 2027 Preparation Tips

With XAT 2027 on January 3, 2027, you have about 81 days from today. This is enough time for a strong score improvement if you follow a structured approach. XAT preparation differs from CAT in key ways — the Decision Making section, abstract literary RC passages, and the unique marking structure all need specific strategies.

1. Start with Decision Making Right Now

Decision Making is the most distinct section in XAT with no equivalent in any other MBA entrance exam. You cannot use CAT study material for DM. Start solving DM question sets from XAT previous year papers (2019–2026) immediately. Focus on understanding why certain choices are eliminated, not just which answer is correct — the reasoning is the skill you are building.

A strong target is to practice at least 3–4 full DM sections per week from genuine XAT papers. Reading the explanations for every answer, right or wrong, builds the ethical reasoning framework this section tests.

2. Strengthen Verbal Ability Through Quality Reading

XAT’s VLA section uses passages from philosophy, literary fiction, social theory, and occasionally poetry. These are harder than most CAT RC passages. You should read quality long-form English writing — The Economist, literary essays, or classic non-fiction — every day for the next 60 days. Aim for at least one full-length piece daily.

For poem-based questions (which appear in some XAT years), practice interpreting tone, theme, and inference from short poems. The approach is similar to abstract prose comprehension but requires recognising figurative language quickly.

3. Your CAT QADI Preparation Largely Covers XAT QADI

If you are preparing for CAT 2026, your quantitative foundation is largely in place for XAT QADI. However, XAT QADI tends to have more multi-step Geometry, Permutations & Combinations, and Data Sufficiency problems than CAT. Make sure these three areas are particularly strong. Practice Data Sufficiency specifically from XAT previous year papers — the approach differs from standard problem-solving.

4. Build a Daily GK Reading Habit

• Track section-wise accuracy closely. XLRI has section-wise cutoffs — a weak single section can cost you a call even if your overall percentile is strong.

6. Plan Your Attempt Strategy Around the Unattempted Penalty

XAT’s –0.05 penalty for unattempted questions beyond 8 means you cannot afford to skip too many. In your mocks, practice leaving at most 8 Part 1 questions unattempted. This requires disciplined time management — deciding in advance how long you will spend on a hard question before moving on.
