- A 2:2 equals 50% to 55% for courses that accept it
- Three-year bachelor's degrees need a first class for most courses
Undergraduate:
- CBSE, ISC and Maharashtra board: 75% (ABB) to 90% (A*AA), depending on the course offer
- Other state boards need higher scores, up to 95% for an A* grade equivalent

University of Birmingham Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Birmingham acceptance rate is 77% (estimated) for undergraduate applicants. The university does not publish an official rate, so this figure is a third-party estimate from 2025 offer data.
Offer rates vary sharply by subject, and medicine and dentistry are far more selective than social sciences. No postgraduate acceptance rate is published.
Reality check: A high overall offer rate does not make every course easy. Indian applicants to competitive courses should aim above the minimum grades.

University of Birmingham vs Peer Universities
The peers below sit in the same QS 2027 band, and all are research universities in England. Students weighing two of them can read University of Leeds vs University of Warwick.
| University | QS World 2027 | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|
| University of Birmingham | #68 | Edgbaston campus with its own railway station |
| University of Warwick | #68 | Campus near Coventry, also in the West Midlands |

[Source: QS World University Rankings 2027]
Birmingham ties Warwick in QS 2027 and ranks above Leeds, Sheffield and Durham. Warwick is the closest regional alternative, since both sit in the West Midlands.
Note: Peer fees are not compared because 2027 international fees were not confirmed for every university.
Birmingham suits Indian students who want a one-year master's at a highly ranked UK university in a large city. Budget GBP 41,520 to 52,500 (INR 52.9 to 66.9 lakh) for the course year, including living costs. The Graduate Immigration Route then allows time to look for work in the UK.
It is a weaker fit for students who need a confirmed fee before shortlisting. Its 2027 fees sit behind each course's fee selector. Those who prefer a smaller collegiate setting can compare Durham University instead.
FAQs
Ques. Does the University of Birmingham charge an application fee for master's courses?
Ans. No. Birmingham University charges no application fee for postgraduate taught courses. Indian students can apply to more than one master's course without paying per application. Each application is still assessed separately, so tailor the personal statement to each course. Research degrees and undergraduate applications follow different routes. Undergraduate applicants apply through UCAS instead.
Ques. Can Indian students use Class 12 English marks instead of IELTS at Birmingham University?
Ans. Yes, for many courses. Birmingham University accepts Indian Standard XII English results as an English language route. The required mark ranges from 75% to 90%. It depends on the exam board and the IELTS level the course needs. Check the course page, because higher-tier courses need a higher Class 12 English mark.
Ques. Does Birmingham University accept the Duolingo English Test for admission?
Ans. No. The Duolingo English Test does not appear on the accepted test list for postgraduate taught courses. Accepted options include IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge English, LanguageCert, Trinity ISE and Oxford ELLT. Indian applicants should book one of these tests early, so results arrive before the course deadline. Scores must meet the subject tier of the chosen course, including each band or skill minimum.
Ques. What are the University of Birmingham conditions and CAS dates for January 2027?
Ans. For January 2027 entry, offer conditions must be met by December 14, 2026. The university issues CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) between December 14 and December 18, 2026. For September 2027 entry, conditions close on August 30, 2027. The last CAS date is September 3, 2027. Missing the conditions date can push the offer to a later intake, so send final documents early.
Ques. Can Indian LLB graduates apply for the LLM at Birmingham University?
Ans. Yes. Birmingham University accepts LLB holders from India for its LLM courses. Both the three-year and five-year LLB qualify. The degree should come from a well-regarded institution, as per the university's India page. Applicants should still meet the IELTS 6.5 law tier, with no band below 6.0. A strong LLB percentage and a clear statement of legal interest help the application stand out.
Ques. Which external Indian scholarships can students use at the University of Birmingham?
Ans. The University of Birmingham lists three external Indian funding options. Inlaks Scholarships cover many subjects but exclude areas such as engineering, computer science, business and medicine. JN Tata Endowment offers loan scholarships for master's and PhD study. The Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust supports Indian women in postgraduate study.
Ques. How can Indian applicants contact the University of Birmingham India team?
Ans. Indian applicants can email the Birmingham University India team at india@contacts.bham.ac.uk. The team handles questions on entry requirements, scholarships and applications. It is the official contact listed on the university's India country page. Applicants should include their course name and intended intake in the email. Sharing the Indian board or university name also helps the team check entry requirements faster.
Ques. Does Birmingham University need a master's degree for PhD applicants from India?
Ans. Usually, yes. Birmingham University expects Indian research applicants to hold a bachelor's degree and, in most cases, a master's degree. The master's should carry 60% or higher, which is the 2:1 equivalent for research entry. Individual schools may set extra subject requirements, so check the research course page. A research proposal and a named potential supervisor often strengthen the application.
Most Liked Reviews
My University of Birmingham honest review
Likes
- The campus is super vibrant and active.
- The faculty is really helpful and supportive.
- The diversity in the university is at maximum, with people from all backgrounds bonding in the best way possible.
Dislikes
- I didn’t like the fact that the university expected us to self-study only instead of teaching much.
- It’s a research-intensive university, which mostly means that they’ll give you a lot of time to research independently.
- Opportunities will not be handed over to you, but you’ll have to be really proactive to grab them.
Admission Experience
- I applied to Queens Mary and Hull University and was accepted into them. I didn’t get any rejection from any university. I applied through my counsellor, and I applied to places where I knew I’d receive it. I applied for different courses at different universities instead.
- I got into the ones we applied for, but I chose the University of Birmingham due to its ranking and my course faculty.
- I chose this university because of its campus, its location, and its ranking. The most important aspect for me was my course modules and faculty, as well as the further opportunities. I received a conditional letter first, then I submitted my documents. I reviewed a scholarship and an unconditional letter with CAS.
- I didn’t take any exams for my course. My IELTS was waived as well. Overall, I didn’t go through major challenges. It was a pretty smooth process for me, as I had researched most of the things.
- I applied for the September 2023 intake. I chose this because I graduated with my bachelors before that, and I didn’t want any education gaps in my journey.
- So, I came as quickly as I could. Moreover, I think the January intake is tougher because the new people have already arrived and it might be a little tough to get along since every master's student already started their journey and their bonding.
Exam
- I didn’t have to take any exams.
- My IELTS was waived off due to my marks in the 12th grade and my bachelor's.
- For the admission process, certain documents to keep in hand would be a statement of purpose, a letter of recommendation (maybe one from school and another from bachelors; also maybe another one from the workplace), a curriculum vitae and your transcripts.
- There was no interview for the application process.
Course Curriculum Overview
- The course is obviously not easy, but being attentive and self-studying would really make things easier. The university is known for its research-based education but that mostly means self-studying and independent research.
- It was a mix of both theoretical and practical approaches. We get a personal academic tutor throughout the course who helps during assessments or whenever you struggle in academics. My classes were 9-5 every alternate week.
- Professors would be open to giving references but you’ll have to do the main work. They can only guide you, hard work is your job. I admire my course faculty because of how supportive they are. They are welcoming, and friendly. Our first day was meeting all of the professors and choosing our modules.
Fees
- It was 26L for the course. Then another 8L for the accommodation rent for the whole year. Monthly expenses varied from 30,000-50,000/month.
- Cabs are expensive but buses are 400-500 to travel for the whole day anywhere in the city. There’s an option to pay the accommodation and tuition fees in instalments. I had mine set up for every 3 months at the university.
Scholarship
- I received a global master's scholarship at the university. This was automatically given to me after receiving my unconditional letter of admission. I think it’s mostly based on your profile, your academic background, and your statement of purpose.
- This award amount was 2L, which was automatically deducted from the tuition fees. I know a lot of my friends who received the same scholarship in the same way.
- I’m not quite sure about financial aid, but a friend of mine came fully funded.
Faculty
- The average people in my class are 120-150 people. There are a lot of Indian students in the university but I noticed a smaller amount of Indians in my course. There’s a lot of diversity in the medical school.
- The teaching methodology is mostly a slide show that plays and is explained from the professor. This is the most that is done. If you have questions, they are always open to answering them.
Campus Life
- There’s one campus in Edgbaston, a sunny oak area with different buildings for different subjects. The campus is huge, vibrant and diverse. It’s amazing to just walk around the campus. There is a well-being team on the campus, along with a community safety team.
- There’s 24/7 surveillance on the campus. The library is huge, and and there is a student union called the Guild of Students where a lot of activities take place, such as self-defence classes, dance classes, pot painting, jewellery making, crafts and other similar activities.
- There are Indian festivals celebrated by the Indian society.
- Oh, there are societies for every country and every hobby. You can also create your own society. It’s really happening and interesting. There are also career network events.

Accommodation
- I found my accommodation through the university portal and chose the accommodation on campus. This was the best decision I made, honestly. So many activities like pot painting, jewellery making, and parties all got the people to bond with each other. I would always recommend an on-campus accommodation.
- University was a 5-10-minute walk, depending on where you have to go. The monthly rent was £700/month and included all facilities like electricity bills, water, repair, maintenance, everything.
- I didn’t have any challenges while booking my accommodation; it was really simple and smooth. University accommodations will really help you grow with the other students, have the best university life, be close to the university and the whole area is a student village.
- It’s a good feeling; you can’t ever feel alone. A lot of Indian students were there in my university accommodation.

Part Time Jobs
- There are a lot of opportunities you can grab at the university, like student ambassador and representative positions. I work as a research assistant currently at my university and also as a student ambassador.
- So, I work on open days. Usual hourly rates are £12/hour along with the holiday entitlement.
- The maximum hours of work you can do during term time is 20 hours a week. It’s really easy to secure on-campus part-time jobs, as there are a lot of openings when you just arrive. It took me a month to secure jobs at the university after my arrival.
- Indian students work at the university as ambassadors, or the guild of students as content shapers and creators. There are a lot of opportunities on campus but also off campus.
- There are hospitality agencies for part-time, like Constellation and Evolution, which pay £12/hour as well as holiday pay. It’s not that easy to secure off-campus placements but it really depends on your proactiveness and attention.
- The usual process for students is to apply online through platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn, and agency sites. You can make a CV suitable for part-time and apply using that particular CV. It’s a pretty smooth and simple process. Just stay active and remain calm. It takes time, but it happens with consistency.
Placement
- Full-time job opportunities honestly depend on the student itself. How well he/she networks, how well he/she actively applies after arrival, and how well he/she develops skills. Fortunately, there are a lot of skill development and career networking events that happen at the university.
- There are career fairs happening at the university that show the graduate schemes of different companies and roles.
- We have online job portals of the university like Worklink. Major companies that hire from my program include the NHS, which offers sponsorship.

Likes
- The campus and facilities are top-notch
Dislikes
- International students are helpless in this job market
Campus Life
- There are lots of events throughout the year, with hundreds of clubs, each club having its own event throughout the year
- One notable thing is that we have our own Guild of Students, which is an independent body (run by students) that governs these clubs
- Sports were also one of the core things that were encouraged. If you were living in the campus accommodation, there were active residence games and activities
- The library is one of the best in the Midlands. They are open 24 * 7 during the exam period, and they even provide blankets
- overall there are hundreds of spots on the campus for studying, for meetings, and the infrastructure they provide to students is second to none.
Fees
- 32000 pounds
Likes
- No regular lectures, 3 times a week
- Assignments were to be mostly typed and not written
- One could book group study rooms in the library for group discussions and studies
Dislikes
- Lack of focused teaching. You are on your own with learning and asking questions
- Lack of exposure (specifically in Msc. Cyber Security). Not many events conducted by the uni
- More theoretical curriculum than practical
Campus Life
- 5 campuses: Edgbaston, Selly Oak, School of Dentistry, Stratford, and one in Dubai
- Everything listed, including swimming pools, cafeterias, job search areas, well-being society, event area, Great Hall, museum, etc.
- September Freshers’ Week is one of them. Easter, Christmas, Good Friday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Diwali, Eid, etc.
- You could opt for basically any sport you want. For student orgs, you could check out the Guild of Students in the university, the university’s student union. There is a society for basically everything and they are quite active. Check out the ones you need and email their handlers; they’d let you in when you attend at least one event of theirs. We also boast a massive 3-storey library with books and desktops so you could stay in it all day or all night (It’s open 24/7).
Fees
- The tuition fee was £27650 for the full year, taken in full (yearly). The living and rental costs were separate from the university’s costs, as we were living in student accommodation on the outskirts of the city. The accommodation is named HamCam and it charged us 99 pppw, which leads to 3 instalments of payment through our entire 1-year span (each instalment is £1350 on average).
- HamCam provided us a bus pass for the entire year so we didn’t have to pay any transportation, but looking at the living costs, the average was about 60 pounds per month.

Likes
- The University of Birmingham has ample of societies to cater the needs of different student interest and fields. There are societies which can help to develop important skill sets. There are social volunteering societies as well which can be added to the CV.
- There are alot of guest lectures and seminars which are field related which can help students to learn in depth in their field.
- Study and work assistance is provided through personal tutor, recorded digital resource on how to make good assignment, instant cv checker , online courses , assignment making related queries one on one meeting session, office hours with the professor and career events.
Dislikes
- As there is academic difference in India and UK, the expectation on the way of writing assignment is very different and higher here in University of Birmingham. This can sometime make things more difficult to adjust to the new way of writing assignments and many lead to less grades if the student hasn't figured out how to do the assignment their way.
- The grading given by professor is extremely strict and student has to go way over the line to get more 70 in each assignment. Usually most students don't get more than 75 in each assignment even after extreme efforts.
- There are some societies in the university of Birmingham which are extremely dull and not engaging as other societies. This creates discrepancy for students who are really passionate to join the society to learn something, contribute and gain some skill sets.
Campus Life
- We have two campuses; one is in Dubai,UAE and the other one is in Birmingham, UK.
- We have Library,Cafes, restaurants, food trucks, cycle repair shop, stationary shop, University Support Center, religious Chaplaincy of Christianity,Islam, Buddhism and Judaism, Sports complexes of various kinds, a guide to student buildings, a lot of study space ,winterborne Garden, study spaces with vending machines, microwaves to use, water filters, coffee machines, on-campus first aid, and ladies toilets with free tampons and sanitary napkins.
Fees
- My fee is 24,000 pounds paid in full installments. For food and other expenses I got 300 pounds per month. For hostel fees I paid 166 per week for 52 weeks (8,632 pounds for the entire year), which includes the utility bill.
- The university takes both full-year and semester-wise payments.
- My estimate for monthly expenses is 300 pounds, including groceries, transportation and regular expenses if utilised smartly with proper considerations. I applied for student accommodation so rent is paid in 9 installments of 1,015 pounds from September 2024 to April 2025 each month.

Likes
- Academic structure - the modules are beneficial to the current field
- Professors Guidance - They will always make sure the students understand the concept
- University job
Dislikes
- Expensive even after scholarship - I had received 40% discount and even after the scholarship it was expensive
- Project time limit has tight deadlines
- Exams are tough
Campus Life
- It is a good university and the subject is advanced statistics-related, which is fundamental to ML. I had emailed the professors prior to the admission and they were very responsive. I had written my IELTS and received an 8/9. There are other requirements like Letter of recommendation, statement of purpose and resume. This led to the admission. The management is responsible, in my experience.
Fees
- Like I had previously mentioned, the fees can be discounted if you have good academic results in your previous education; otherwise, it’s 13,100 GBP. It can be paid in quarterly instalments, or it can be paid all at once. Paying in instalments is a safer option.
- Helps students gain some income if they work in between the course. If it’s two years, also called part-time, it is still the same amount

Likes
- The university provided great opportunities alongside the course and let us explore outside the classroom.
- The university runs amazing educational and social events throughout the year
- The lecturers are very knowledgeable and help you understand the concepts
Dislikes
- As I joined an LLM program, which was for one year, there was not enough time to learn everything about the university
- The number of lectures for my LLM course was much less than for other courses.
- The university did not let me change my dissertation topic, as there was no supervisor for my preferred topic
Campus Life
- I am only aware of one campus.
- We have a library, a Cafe - Starbucks, and a sports centre.
- There are Christmas rides outside the Birmingham main library during the season, and the Birmingham Christmas market is also great.
- For Law – There is a women's law society and the Birmingham Law society.
- I was a part of the calligraphy society and dance society with the student union, which is called Guild of Students.
Fees
- The fees for the entire course were 24,000 GBP
- I got a scholarship for 3,000 GBP, so I paid 21,000 GBP
- I stayed in a private student accommodation, which cost 7,500 GBP per year
- Fees were paid semester-wise
- My monthly living cost was about 950 - 1000 GBP
- Rent – 625 GBP
- Transportation – 40 GBP
- Groceries – 250 GBP
- Other expenses – 50 GBP

Campus Life
- 3 campuses, 1st in Edgbaston, Birmingham city. With 700-800-acres campus, 2nd in dubai. And 3rd in singapore.
- We have library, sports building, gym, museum, cafes, food court, gardens, etc.
- Grad ball, vale fest, freshers week, and many events take place here. Every month there are some events that take place. All events are conducted by a guild of students mostly. Many clubs are also there like consulting club, hindu club, literary club, etc.
- The main one is the guild of students, which is responsible for the events happening around. Vale fest is the biggest fest that happens here during summer, with all the university accommodations taking part. And many sports athletes also represent us in olympics.
Fees
- During my time it was 36500 gbp for the whole tuition fee. For the hostel, I stayed in maple bank and it was 100 gbp per week. And the monthly food spend was around 350 gbp.
- You get the first two options, but not the credit-based one. Although I paid it all together, that means I paid the whole fee in one go.
- 800 gbp monthly, in which 450 is for rent 300 for food and approximately 50 for travel.

Likes
- Large number of student societies which helps in building strong connections and a community.
- Good and quiet study places for reading while on campus during lecture breaks.
- Diversity of students that help in learning different cultures.
Dislikes
- Some days are very hectic with back to back lectures, while on other days there is no lecture.
- Lifts are not available in all building because of which I had to make use of stairs (2 floors) for 9 am lectures.
- Very less vegetarian options available (being a vegetarian) at the campus so I had to prepare my lunch in the morning which is so disappointing.
Campus Life
- My university has a total of 2 campuses.
- 1. Edgbaston Campus: It is the main campus of the university, located in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
- 2. Selly Oak Campus: It is next to Edgbaston Campus in Selly Oak village, which is nearest to the market and shopping centres.
- Fact: I live in Selly Oak.
- There are many facilities available on campus. There’s a big library with separate rooms that can be booked for group studies and has a cafe and printing machines. There are playgrounds for various sports like tennis, basketball, and football. The University provides free sports sessions for students that can be booked via the app. There’s also a swimming pool on the campus itself. Medical facilities are provided at the Guild of Students for free.
- The major festivals celebrated on campus are Christmas and Easter, where students are provided gifts. Other than that cultural events are organised by different student societies which make them feel at home and celebrate festivals away from home.
Fees
- My first year fees was £23,640 along with £8,932
- Accommodation fees for a 44-week period. Any other charges for groceries are not included. The fees may change each year so the university gives information about it each year.
- The fees are charged yearly or in installments. Students can choose different methods according to their convenience.
- My monthly expenses go around £900, which includes my accommodation fees, transportation and other expenses.

Likes
- First, to start with the superficial, the campus is beautiful - green, situated on a hill and a mix of modern and archaic architecture.
- The professors are so understanding and well-read, it is amazing just to chat with them, let alone hear them in a classroom.
- The students were of a variety of ages, something you don’t usually see in India. My youngest classmate was my age (22), while the oldest was 52! This presents the students with a range of experiences and ideas when we do group tasks.
Dislikes
- The weather felt dry and too cold all the time, especially when the university is situated on a hill. You must hit the gym before you join uni!
- The extremely polite nature of the professors sometimes made the discussion hours a bit futile. I appreciate the soft criticism, but often it felt that the real matter is not coming to the surface.
- The campus sometimes felt too big - you must leave for class way before you plan, because you probably will be late!
Campus Life
- There is one, the main one, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, and there is one in Dubai.
- Every facility is available on the campus. There are many cafés and eating spots (based on your budget); there is a gym where you can spot olympic atheletes, you will even find a place to get bikes and your glasses (specs) fixed right on the campus!
- The buildings are spacious and all have vending machines for quick snack breaks while you study! I am an introvert so I did not go to many events, but Christmas celebrations are huge on the campus – they even put various rides right in the middle!
Fees
- My course fees were originally £22,000, but due to the £2,000 scholarship, they were reduced to £20,000. I had my own room in my flat; there are many more options - to share bathrooms, etc.—but I had all of the private options, which cost me around £8,000. I had chosen the 3-month payment plan, which costs a bit more than if you choose to pay all the fees together.

- No diversity in major courses. As my course had people from

Campus Life
- Every department had different buildings with well-equipped classrooms and labs. A separate 5-floor library on the university campus and indoor sports facilities and medical labs were also available. Music club, dance club , food court – everything is there on the university campus. Very well equipped.

Likes
- The University was very welcoming. Made me and other students welcoming in a great accommodation.
- Great teachers/professors with good command on the subject made the entire journey in learning AI smooth and enjoyable experience
- Course structure - Structure of the course is designed to ensure you are industry ready and with constant theoretical and practical assessment its a seamless transition for a student to enter a corporate.
Dislikes
- Safety - This is one aspect that has to be careful of. Its gets little spooky after 9 PM. So one has to be slightly careful.
- Part time job - With so many students around, it can be slightly difficult to get an ideal part time job.
- Overall Cost - The cost can be slighly heavy on the pocket if one doesn't get scholarship and with extremely high cost of living , one has to be extremely careful on what he/she spends on.
Campus Life
- There is only one main campus located in Birmingham.
- Facilities –
- Library with WiFI
- Lecture Theatres & Study Areas
- Research Facilities & Labs
- Accommodation
- Sport & Fitness
- Cafes, Restaurants, and Bars
- The campus has a number of food and beverage outlets, including cafes, restaurants, and bars.
- Festivals and Events –
- I actively took part in one event – the Science & Tech event. Although campus organises many events on Music, Art, medicine. There are many clubs and societies that students are part of.
Fees
- I was charged 23K GBP for Course, 5K GBP for University accommodation. Fees were paid to the university in 3 splits, which can be paid at the university in person or through Wire transfer from India.
- University is quite flexible in terms of making the payments.
- For the rest of the expenses, one would require around 5K GBP in addition to ensuring everything is taken care of.
